Sambharam- Buttermilk flavoured with spices

This month I will be presenting a lot of Iftar recipes for all the followers of Crackleandtemper . In that series the first one would be a buttermilk flavoured with spices . This is a very light refreshing drink flavored with mild spices and good to break the fast . It also sits light on your tummy  and refreshes you instantly on  hot summer day . Sambharam is a traditional refresher drink made with beaten yogurt and spiced with green chillies and ginger . At some places they add small red onions with curry leaves , but I have used cilantro here instead of small red onions . This is to give a different flavor to this drink and small red onion was unavailable at that time .
Sambharam is served at the end of every traditional sadya (feast) in kerala. The addition of spices to it makes it a refreshing drink for hot summers . So in this summer do try this mouthwatering kerala style drink to quench your thirsts. This is also generally served as a welcome drink in kerala households during scorching summer because of it’s naturally refreshing property. It also helps to cool down the body and aids in digestions; that’s the main reason why sambharam is served after a heavy meals like sadya. It is very easy to make this dish , does not take more than 5 minutes to whip this up . I even prefer to have rice and pickle with sambharam as a lazy lunch to keep my tummy cool .
Prep Time – 10 minutes
Cook Time- 5 minutes

Yogurt plain – 1 cup
Water – 2 cups
Ginger- grated one teaspoon
Green chilly- 1 chopped
Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
Coriander leaves- 2 to 3 sprigs
Lemon juice – couple of drops
Salt- as needed

1. In a bowl place yogurt , ice , ginger , coriander , curry leaves , green chilly and salt
2. Add water to it and beat till smooth . Check for salt if needed add more
3. Pour over ice in a glass and serve chilled
